Hello,

First post so excuse my ignorance. I own a Colt H-Bar with the typical handle style. Can I buy a new flat top with scope rail and replace just the handle portion and use the existing barrel? If so, can the front sight be removed or should I cut the barrel back and recrown? Or would i be ahead just to buy an entire new upper assembly?

Thanks

Yes you can swap. I do it all the time, flat tops for A2 style.

You will need a few special tools to do so. And the front sight base is removable, again with a few special tools. No real need to cut-n-crown unless you want to change the length of the barrel. Though you can change the upper on the barrel without removing the FSB, and if you use ariser, your optic will see above the FSB and you can back up the optic with a BUIS (back up iron sight) behind the riser.

Who would you guys reccomend for the new part and will the front sight be a problem with the scope line of sight? How difficult would it be to remove the front sight and cut the barrel back and make it a 16 or 18 incher?

Thanks, that is what I was hoping. What would something like this cost, approximately?
Great site here!

For tools you'll want a barrel wrench, a receiver vise block and access to a vise. All you really need for parts would be the stripped flattop receiver; you can use the forward assist and port door from your existing receiver. Stripped uppers abound in the $100-125 range. You may or may not need to get a taller front sight post - try to zero the finished product with what you've got before you buy anything else.

I just went full circle on this. I think I am going to keep my current upper but change the part (?) to the flat top and not buy a new upper that I was aking about in another thread I started. Seems like it is the cheapest way for me to get what I want. The Varmit uppers are going to be too heavy for yote hunting/hiking.
What is the replacement part called and who make a decent one for the money?
I think I will just get a riser so the optics do not pic any part of the FSB up and leave the FSB installed like the previous poster explained (thanks). That would annoy me if I seen any shadows from the FSB so hopefully the riser will bring it up above the FSB.(?) If not I will cut the FSB off with a dremel tool. I was wondering if the RRA Forged EOP Upper Receiver Assembly would do the trick without using a riser to get above the FSB?
Plan to mount an Elite 4200 3X9 scope.
Thanks guys for the input. I really appreciate it!
