Tier number.
Or use the numbers as markers for sites or a scope.

Some organizations are so strict when it comes to weapon setups they dictate where on the rifle certain pieces can go.  Having the "T marks" as they are called helps make this easier.

I've also written down what T marks all my stuff is at just so I don't have to remember.

It is an "address" if you will.
Once you add an accessory to the rail and provided it has a return to zero mount you can take the item off the gun and as long as you return it to that "address" then your zero will still be good. Some people use the same gun for different reasons and just swap the optic.
Same applies to adding stuff to the rails.
