I'm going to be doing a 15" floating handguard at some point, and I see lots of different brands and prices ranging from $60 to $400.

Are any of the budget friendly ones actually quality units?

I'm not going to be mounting anything to it, it's just a looks thing and so I can get a more forward grip on the gun.

I like the Midwest Industries ones, and they seem to be the most popular......but at $220 is it really any better than the $60 one that looks almost identical?

Thanks

I have been using YHM.
All the ones I have installed have been solid.
YHM uses proprietary barrel nuts.

I would hate to spend $70 on one, only to have it suck.
The MI one I like is $190, but I found it for $160 online. I've been watching eBay and other sites for anything used, but that market is pretty slow.

A top rail is all I need, just in case down the road I want to mount flip up sights. Other than that on the bottom I want to put on a Magpul angled fore grip.....so the bolt on rail would work.

I'm in no hurry, so I 'll keep an eye out for a deal if it pops up.

Thanks,

Steve

Anyone here using this one, or have any info on this brand?

About the cheapest I'd be willing to go is ALG Defense.

ALG makes a great rail at a great price point.  They could probably sell those things for double their going rate and they'd still be worth it. They start at $100 or so.

ALG looks very nice, and I like a couple of them............but again it's back in the $165 to $180 range for it in 15"

Here's the way i look at it.  If you're all about spartan utilitarianism, as in, it just works, (free floats the barrel, has the mounts you need, doesn't break/come loose) A sub $150 handguard will do the trick just fine, at the end of the day as long as they don't break they'll be functionally the same as the higher $ handguards out there.

On the other hand, if you find yourself coveting, but not being able to afford the higher dollar stuff, take a breath and save a few more bucks.  You'll buy it eventually, but after spending the $ on the cheaper option, then selling it for a loss (and it's not a seller's market right now) and buying again.  Buy once, cry once.

MI is good stuff.  they're light and strong.  BCM, knights, noveske are good too for a bit more.  Haven't seen anything in the $400 range that offers what those 4 don't.

Exactly how I think too...............I would hate to buy a cheaper unit only to have it suck, and then have to buy the better unit down the road anyhow.

That's why I was asking if any of the "cheaper" units are worth it..............but I'm not finding any real reviews of the $60-$80 ones.

I may just wait until after the holidays and see how I make out................then buy an ALG or MI

It's not like I'm going to war or using the rifle every day for work.............it's my pit gun and target shooting gun, basically a toy. So basically I'm doing it for looks, with only a grip located on the bottom.

If we had a proven program for our mill and bought good quality extrusions at a truckload rate I am still not sure we could produce the finished product and sell it for $60-$80 each.

The cheapest QUALITY free float handguards in my opinion are the ALG and the UTG Pro Super Slim. I haven't seen an ALG in person but all I hear are good reviews. The UTG Pro I have on two rifles and I know several people that also have them, and we are all extremely happy.

Matrix Arms sells a solid affordable handguard. You can buy from their website or other distributors I'm sure.
Here's a decent review as well. Review

My brother has a 15" Lavi (more expensive) on his setup and he loves it. Light, easy to install and solid fit.

I'm sure there are dozens of good ones.

Whatever White Oak Armament recommends will be among your best choices for utility and accuracy.

You are approaching the best sale days of the year. Between Veterans Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas and New Years sales, you should be able to get whatever at a better price. There is always a thread (or a dozen) on what super deal is out there posted here. Narrow your search to a couple of items and wait it out. When the deal shows, nab it. I'm making a list now and subscribing to places to get notifications for sales. Time is on your side....use it.

I'm really liking the ALG V2 one, no full length rail on top.......just a small one at the front if you want to do a flip up sight.
It get's good reviews online, looks very solid, and is $165.

I'll wait a little bit and see if some black friday sales knock the price down on it........or a used one pops up.

Damnit man!  Good catch.  The price on these is great.  I am thinking about ordering one myself now.  Why in the hell didn't they come out with these first?

Only an ounce or two difference and I am willing to bet these are stronger.
