My Colt SP1, as is standard, does not have a forward assist.  The first ARs didn't have them either because Stoner felt that it could turn a minor stoppage into a real serious one.  The Army made him add on.  Personaly I agree with Stoner.  I was on active duty in 1974, commissioned in 1973.  I did basic at Ft. Knox in 1971 and qualified expert with the M16A1.  In all my time I never really found much use for the forward assist.  It was easier to remove a bad round with the charging handle than thoroughly jam it with the forward assist.  What say you all?

Yeah, the only "logical" use for them that I've heard of is being able to quietly "ease" the bolt down then press it into battery.
I've never personally been in a situation where I needed to silently charge an AR, though, so I can't say I've ever found it necessary.
