I know this may sound dumb but, what does the forward assist button do, and when do you use it? As you can tell I know nothing about a AR. Thanks, SW |

One of the first malfunctions a properly built AR will have with decent ammo is a failure to lock. This is caused by carbon building up on the rear of the bolt and the interior face of the bolt carrier. This extra thickness prevents the bolt from fully telescoping into the carrier. The FA will push the carrier shut and allow you stay in the fight. FA is used during SPORTS and during loading as a safeguard. If water gets in the bore the bolt must be slightly retracted to break the seal at the rear. The FA is used to push the carrier closed on the loaded chamber. Some will advocate the FA for use in "stealth" loads. Whatever's clever. |
