It seems like the forward assist is useless or is it just me??

It's more of a military item. It would be used in combat where you fire hundreds and hundreds of rounds without cleaning. Sand, dirt, grit, etc. gets in the chamber and hitting the FA will close the dirty bolt.

Been shooting AR's and M16's for 33 years. I've have not yet used one.
