Do we have a frakengun pic thread around here? Something devoted to the true mutts of our hobby? If not anyone want to play?

You know I actually looked up the definition in the urban dictionary before I posted this I read it to me a specific model of weapon made up of mismatched parts. If it means something else here my bad. I know every forum has its own take on terminology and maybe I havent been here long enough to catch on.

I see your point. I was thinking more along the lines of several different manufactures all piled onto one rifle not just the Brand name x lower mated to brand name y upper.

Top one is all Colt; bottom was my second AR. Dane Armory lower receiver bought in 2007, DPMS internals with JP Springs, upper is a mix of parts: (1) Colt 14.5 barrel, (2) CMT upper with M4 Feedramps bought from Denny's guns, (3) LMT F/A bolt carrier group, and (4) Larue 7.0 rail. It may be a Frankengun, but it is a well built Frankengun with quality parts; never have had any problems with any type of ammunition.

Have you got to shoot that at distance? I'm curios if the extended flash hider keeps the velocity up at range. It seems like it would at least to a degree.

It's a 10" barrel so I know the velocity is on par with with my SBR's. I've taken it out a few times to sight it in. I haven't shot it past 50 yards yet.

For any of you using ghetto barrels (i.e., non-Colt/BCM/DD), have you had any issues with out-of spec / tight chambers? Anyone find they needed to have the chamber reamed to true 5.56 NATO?

ghetto barrels...?
I have a couple rifles with dti barrels, and they function 100% and are dead nutz accurate barrels. chambers are close enough and cause no issues for what I use them for

The term Frankengun usually has the connotation of being an AR15 made up of cheap or low quality parts. Is that how you are meaning it in this thread, or are you talking about upper end custom builds?
View Quote

Stick, my interpretation of a frankengun is a gun assembled with a mix and match of basic AR components by different manufacturers and/or utilities regardless of quality or cost. This does not include forward grips, lights and mounts, lasers or optics (unless the optics completely replace the sights).
Remember, Frankenstein was not poor as he lived in a castle. He could have used wealthy parts in his "build".

I was looking at my boxes of AR parts and decided to see what I'd have to buy to build a complete AR. It turned out all I needed was a FA assembly.

Eagle Arms/Armalite lower, DPMS LPK, generic duckbill grip, Ace ARFX stock, Knight's Armament FF forend, heavy barrel shortened so the OAL is 16-1/8" including the pinned and welded YHM Phantom, Samson spring loaded folding front sight/gas block, Matech BUIS, Surefure light with the pressure pad in a Tangodown VFG, Badger Ordnance charging handle latch, YHM rail mount sling swivel and a 1-1/2x ACOG. Oh, can't forget the Krylon paint job. The ACOG and light were afterthoughts, so they still have to be painted to match.

There's no good rear sling attachment point on an ARFX stock so I drilled and tapped the inside of the buttplate. It balances the rifle well and the sling attachment is out of the way.

My one (and only) rifle is a frankengun.  It started life as a Sig 516 but I then mated it with a BCM light-weight upper and a Spike's BCG.

With the OP's intended definition my primary carbine would definitely be considered a 'frankengun'

Smith & Wesson stripped lower receiver with BCM, PSA, Spikes Tactical, ALG, Battle Arms Development,  VLTOR, B5, and Magpul parts. Aero Precision stripped upper with PSA, FN, BCM, Spikes Tactical, Centurion Arms, Magpul, Troy Industries, Aimpoint, American Defense, VLTOR, and SureFire parts.

My secondary carbine is nearly identical and certainly fits the definition:

The only difference worth noting for the purpose of this thread is that the stripped lower receiver on this carbine is a SA&A (Surplus Ammo & Arms) part (technically Aero Precision with SA&A rollmark). All other parts are from the same manufacturers.

It was a serious question. I guess for accuracy I should have used an "e.g." instead of "i.e." and also a smiley next to "ghetto" since people are being so sensitive to the way I prefaced my comment and disregarding my actual question.  Oh well, I'll take that to mean most have not run into any issues with tight chambers, or not "run" (please forgive me ) their guns to a point where they have noticed any issues. I was just curious. This is a picture thread, after all, so if there are no responses to the question, that's fine too.
