Im At a delimma, my choices are between a pri gen III  free float or a KAC  standard length free float ras, im building an SPR inspired rifle around a  krieger 20 inch 1/7.75 twist  barrel so it's not going to be the normal 18 inch spr type rifle. Would you guy's recomend going ahead and purchasing a pri ff or is there better option's avaliable? i plan to use this rifle at long to medium range varmint and target type shooting so i want a stable platform.

Also if i went the KAC way, i would only be adding a bipod plus rail cover's and if i went pri id only have to deal with the bipod side of thing's and in my opinion is the better way too go but just wondering how stable they are

I have one of each, I love them both. Both are really top quality, but both have very different feels and looks to them. Seriously, Im sorry to put it like this, but pick whichever you think looks nicer. I really dont think one is "better" than the other, they're just different.

EDWIN907,

YOUR PHOTO SKILLS ARE SIMPLY INCREDIBLE. NO ONE SHORT OF ICHIRO NAGATA DOES BETTER. HE GETS ALL THE LATEST "PROPS".

I TOO LIKE THE KAC LONG M4 FF RAS AND THE PRI GEN III FOREND. I'VE BUILT A LOT OF FINE UPPERS WITH BOTH.

THAT BEING SAID, LET ME OFFER ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE - THE LARUE 13.2:

THIS UPPER ALSO IS BUILT AROUND A 20" KRIEGER. SUCH UPPERS HAVE MUCH MORE IN COMMON WITH THE USMC EAST COAST SAM THAN THE SPR, IMO.

Thanks WES, for the very very generous compliment.
Mr Nagata's photo work is legendary, and unlike me, he is a real artist, truly gifted.
Another very talented photographer is Dr Lunde who does pistol photography.  Hi site is worth the effort to visit, I promise.  www.praxagora.com/lunde/firearms.html

I like to try to present photos of weapons that are lifelike and informative as to the colors, tones, and textures, so that readers here can get a real "feel" for the weapon and/or accessories.

The multitude of photos from the many different photographers of various weapons and equipment that can be found on this site is amazing.  Want to know what a TA31 looks like on a M4, well it's here!  Or on a midlength with a LT rail and KAC panels with a TD forward grip? It's here too!

I can't tell you how many times I have looked at the MSTN industry forum and the many fine rifles there, and your forum there was the inspiration for the 20" gov prof with LaRue Tactical 13.2 pictured below.

Certainly not the Krieger barreled MSTN built precision weapon it was inspired by, but instead a relatively lightweight high muzzle velocity blaster that's great fun nevertheless.

Anyway, I love this photo of my 20" with the LT 13.2 rail and low profile gas block.
Somewhere out there, someone in the middle of considering a build, will really appreciate it.

I'm actually hoping to begin a 20" build in the very near future, and this thread, without a doubt, has been very helpful and inspiring.  Thanks guys!  Now if TROY would just make a tube to cover the gas block on a 20" I'd be in heaven...I'll probably have to go with the LaRue.

By the way...what gas blocks are in the last two pics?  They look awesome!

I don't think that the standard Troy MRF-R looks too bad on a 20"

It's the LaRue Tactical low profile gas block.  Here's a different view of the same rifle.

Now, I need to get WES to build me a Krieger barreled upper just like this gov prof.

Not that there are not a few quality alternatives out there like the LaRue FF Rail, but what is it you want to end up with?  An SPR "type" or a Mk12 Mod 0 or a Mk 12 Mod 1 clone?
From a collector's and investor's perspective, I'd put my $ into as much a 100% clone of either the Mod 0 or the MOD 1 (the Mod 1 being with our KAC FF Rail Forend).

[]Also, don't know if you all caught it, but CBS's The Unit last Monday night  featured a Mod 1 SPR as part of the team's ordnance.  At first I thought it was a Mk 11 because of the 20 round straight-bodied magazine, but the next view of it made it look like a 20-round M16 magazine.  However, there was no doubt about our FF rail on their SPR, along with our 200-600 meter flip rear sight.  Pretty authentic I'd say for them not to just use a 30-rounder like their M4A1's were sporting.  And catch the S-B on one of their M4's.

THERE IS NO DOUBT A HUGE INTEREST IN EXACT REPLICAS OR CLONES. WE DID QUITE WELL IN THIS AREA UNTIL OUR 75 OPS-INC 2-PORT BRAKES DRIED UP. WE CAN NAIL THE NAVY RECCE, THOUGH, WITH A KAC FULL LENGTH FF RAS.

YOU CAN GET PRETTY CLOSE TO AN EAST COAST SAM, EXCEPT THE KAC FRLIP UP FRONT IS NOT AVAILABLE. IF KNIGHT'S WERE TO OFFER A SET SCREW OR CLAMP ON VERSION, I THINK THE K.A.C. FANS ON AR15.COM WOULD SOAK UP A HUNDRED OR SO THE FIRST MONTH THEY WERE OUT.

COLDBLUE - GLAD TO HEAR YOU SOMETIMES RELAX!

Hey, I am always relaxed, but sometimes I am armed and relaxed.

I don't know how many of you also may have caught the first episode of The Unit, but between the Team Leader's question when he accosted the troops lounging in the air port terminal with "How many RANGER Tabs do I see here...?", to at the very end scene replacing the shunt on the end of the Claymore cable after gingerly removing the Hell Box, this all rang pretty authentic to me.  They must have a really good technical adviser.

Wes is right-on with if our flip front sight base could be made with set screws.  I have made a couple and they work fine, especially if you drill little divots on the underside of the barrel for the screw ends to bury in.  This makes the unit rock-solid.  One of these days we will have tme to make a hundred of these and offer them to you all.  However, right now we are backed-up with hundred's of Mk 11 orders and pending SASS (M-110)'s to follow-on.  And unfortunately, neither of these use that particulat front sight because its only for our 5.56mm SR-16's.

When I saw it, I figured it for a Mk 11 also.  I saw the KAC FF and thought the receivers were the larger 308 type?  If I am watching TV, I am usually doing two things at once, so I didn't pay that close of attention.  So far I really like that show.

I think I wanted it to be a Mk 11 so bad, when I saw the magazine the second time, I errored on the side of caution and went with the SPR.  It could have been either one.
How will we ever know?
You can get to the show's web site via CBS.  There is a photo of the technical guy, with his weekly critic, but apparently no way to e-mail him.

coldblue,

I've been told recently that the Mk 11 will be available to civilians. Is this true, and if so, can you guesstimate a time frame of availability? 2008? I sure would love to pick one up, and I fear that another ban might make that impossible by the time existing orders are filled.

I wish I had bought the PRI. Quality plus the ultimate in a scope mounting platform.  Rounded grip area and bipod mount[short rail] and Arms Harris mount. Kac BUIS would sure go nice with it too.

Reference the photo above. Put yourself in that photo. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to move that scope foreward, about as much as you wish?

Rifle in "The Unit" looked to me like it was a Knights .308 with a full length FF RAS and a 16" stainless barrel. How silly are all of us, you know we werw all watching it at the same time and thinking the same things!!!

Wow! Thanks for the pictures.  Way cool thing to do.
Lower receiver in the top picture is not a Stoner.  The "dam" around the magazine release button is definately not SR-25/Mk 11.  It looks M16 to me.
Also, the upper has a forged case deflector.  Only our last several months of Mk 11/M-110 SASS production has our new forged uppers with this feature integral to it.

As to civilian sales in the future, it is dim.  There is an ever increasing 7.62mm demand from US Military and Government that will most probably preclude us from offering any real volume commercially for at least a year.

Great pictures and thread.  Just FYI, Troy does now make a 13.5 rail that will cover the gasblock on a rifle gas system.

THE PRI FLIP UP WITH THE KAC LONG FF RAS FOREND ARE QUITE COMPATIBLE.

I KNOW A PLACE THAT STOCKS BOTH, TOO.
