Trying to take off my free float hand guard. I was making sure that it was standard thread and not reverse. Anyone? Also does anyone have some tips as to how to do this without marking it up please by all means let me know.

Thanks

Can you tell us what make & model? (each has it's quirks)

It was a special build but the is 16in is basically the same. I have a heavy barrel not the stainless. Different gas block but that is not really relevant. I was trying one of those rubber oil filter wrenches but I ripped the rubber out of the wrench.

Mine had to be vised, heated with a torch, and a strap wrench used to get it free.

A strap wrench might be enough for you. I had mine done by Denny and he didnt leave a mark on it, even after all that.

I have a similar problem with a model 1 varmint upper. I used the cloth strap wrench but could not turn it. anyone has any other ideas?

Is it slipping? If it is holding tight just get a cheater bar on it. If it is slipping, I don't know what to tell you.

Freeze it, then heat it with a torch and pop it free.

It wasn't slipping. What is the typical torque applied to free float tube installation? If I torch it, will it discolor the free float? Would a free float wrench work better than strap wrench?

A barrel nut will usually torque around 30 pounds.  The upper limit is 80 or 90, check the TM for the actual numbers.
As for torching it, you shouldn't heat it that much, just enough to expand the nut off of the upper.  Don't bear down with 18" of blue flame, just start heating it and try to loosen, alternating until it comes off.
