Guys,

I am looking into getting a non-FF handguard (railed).  My question is this.  overtime, once the parts on the rifle are broken in like the delta ring, springs, things of that nature, can I expect that a drop in non-ff rail is going to shift back and forth on me?  I know alot of them lock up tight, especially the two piece ones, but overtime i am hearing that they will eventually be able to move back and forth because they are only held in by spring pressure from the delta ring.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks

Two-piece drop-ins usually have movement regardless of the age of the parts. If you don't want any movement then you'll need a FF system.

My two piece rail from Doublestar has no play whatsoever.  I dont see how the delta ring spring will get worn out considering you should only be compressing it once to take the old handguard off and once to put the new one on.

Depends on the manufacturer you choose.  The KAC M4 RAS non-free float rail locks to the barrel nut; there is no noticeable movement  and stays so over time.

SO if one was mounting optics or lasers on ones hand guard, is it fair to say that is when someone would take the time and effort to install a non FF guard?  If you're just mounting say a grip and tactical lite, then why mess with taking off the delta ring and what not?  Sorry if that's a dumb question, I'm an AR newb.  I did just order an MI FF gaurd cuz it seemed to make the most sense for my plans.

This is what I was going to get...

with this setup, can I expect over time the handguard is going to be able to move back and forth just by manually moving it?  I am just trying to avoid spending the money for a FF and having a gun smith install it.

It depends on the particular rail to barrel nut fit. You & I could have the exact same set ups, install the exact same two-piece rail & I could have movement while you do not. The delta ring springs will not wear out unless you are constantly compressing & releasing them...just as is the case with any other spring. A drop in rail will move on the bottom if you apply enough rearward force. Some just have slop in them period. In any case, a little movement in the rail shouldn't bother you anyway. Like I previously stated...if you don't want movement then you need to buy a FF system.

This, my Doublestar two piece rails have zero play and I don't see how they would loosen up at all.

DD OMEGA, what does the allen screws screw into?  I know there are 4 flat head screws to lock the two pieces together, but what does the allen screws do?

They screw against the barrel nut to take up the slack.

My Doublestar is also solid and against all conventional wisdom I mounted a laser on it, an Aimshot LS 8200.
For the practical range of a laser it holds zero well.
I know alot of you hate lasers, flame on, I don't care. It's fun as hell, and removes quickly. And I do shoot for fun sometimes.
