| I lucked into 10 USGI mags, at no charge, 3 are unissued in wrapper, 2 are well used-green follower, 5 are well used-black follower. I did have some feeding issues with the black followers, and plan on replacing them. My question is, how can you tell if a mag spring needs replacing as well.? Thanks. |

When it stops feeding rounds AND/OR when the bolt wont lock back. Ive got some mags that I can push the follower down easily and it still works at the range with no issues. I think USGI mags are very forgiving when it comes to their springs. |

I have a black follower mags that function just fine. If the mag body is OK then $4 for follower and spring gets you what is basically a new mag. From what I've seen with a brief search, the green followers are not significantly cheaper than Magpul.
Check the specs on the body and feed lips fefore putting more money into a bad body. |

My experience is the springs don't really wear out that bad. I have some mags from the 1970's all the way through the early 2000's. Some are green, some are black. The springs are of different lengths... yet have the same number of coils. But, they all function flawlessly.
I have never replaced a follower... or a spring. |

I think worn springs become more of an issue if you have a full auto AR. Many Semi only AR's have few problems with older springs. John |

In my opinion, the USGI green followers are better than the magpul ones. I know that's "heresy" on this website, but the bottom line is that I and many others have had problems with magpul ones because they fit too tightly in the mag body. The green anti-tilt followers that the government uses are the best because they stop the "bolt over base" malfunctions that tend to happen with the old black followers when the springs start to weaken, yet they still leave enough "wiggle room" in the mag so that if sand or any other obstruction gets in the mag, the follower won't jam up. I know there are lots of magpul koolaid drinkers here, so they're welcome to flame away, but the truth is the truth and hype is just that... hype. There's a good reason the government still uses the green followers. They work. No reason to fix what isn't broken. |
