Is it possible to freefloat a barrel (carbine), and still use the standard handguards?

If so, what parts are needed?

I'm going with, no.

yes.

bushmaster makes a set of standard handguards for DCM that uses a special barrel nut, gas tube, etc

For a 20" barrel.

I've never seen this for carbine, but that doesn't mean no one out there has a way to do it.

Someone with very strong WESCOG-Fu could probably make it work using those parts.

IMHO you're better off using the JP/VTAC or PRI tubes.  These can be configured with no rails, or if you so chose, rails in only the positions you require.

Rock River has something like that on its National Match Rifles

*Edit* - sorry, didn't comprehend the carbine part before hitting submit

Dont forget about Dave Laucks stuff: D&L Sports handguards
8 bolts holding it in place! I have handled and fired a rifle with this handguard, and I can't wait to put one on mine!!

Yes, I got one for my carbine.  My wife bought it for me as a gift (lots of hints left) from JP enterprises.  It will hold the slim grips if you remove the heat shields and do a little cleaning (plastic removal) from the inside of the grip.

I currently have the Surefire 500 light integrated M-4 style grips on mine (large hand guard), and the heat shields will fit.  No mods needed here.

I had to tweak the gas tube just a little though, not much.  You replace the barrel nut, remove the hand guard cap and thread the float tube on the new barrel nut.  Of course the FSB has to be temporarily removed.

Best part is if you don't want the float tube anymore, you unscrew the float tube, replace the hand guard cap (leave the barrel nut on) and put the hand guards back on.

I don't know what it's made of but it's tuff.  I learned that a floated barrel WILL make a noticeable difference off a bench.

Only problem is the new barrel nut is aluminum, very soft - the points will break off if your not VERY careful when you torque it down.

Aren't the PRI tubes smooth and you add rails where you want them?  There are plenty of options without rails on them.

I am not a fan of round free float tubes like JJREA suggests, but would think it is a mile ahead of the option you are asking for.

Do you mean std carbine HGs or std rifle HGs?

If std carbine HGs, Accuracy Speaks makes a carbine-length NM-style steel float tube that fits underneath composite carbine HGs (and also maybe John Holliger from White Oak.  I purchased a mid-length NM-style float tube from him.  He may make up a carbine length for you).

Otherwise I'm not sure if you could shave your GB , if it would fit underneath a rifle-length HG.  If so, then I'm not sure how the resultant float tube would be installed.  If the tube would clear the shaved GB and still fit underneath the HGs, I guess it would work.  You'd also need a barrel clamp or another FSB installed up near the muzzle, like a Dissipator config.

I mean standard carbine handguards.

This is starting to sound like an expensive proposition that will add too much weight, which is something I'd like to avoid.

It appears that the free float configuration that allows the use of standard handguards is almost always intended for (and better suited for), a rifle, not a carbine.

So it's looking like free floating the barrel will mean the addition of rails, which is also somthing I wanted to avoid.

With the PRI tube you can install it without the rails:

That cuts 4 oz. off the weight. Pretty easy installation, too.

YES, Brownells sells, a freefloat tube with standard handguards. The only thing that holds the tube on is the Delta ring.

I asked this question a few days ago. Accuracy Speaks has a CAR length service rifle style FF tube. You can use your regular handguards, and you're freefloated.

Ok, that is EXACTLY what I'm looking for.  Thanks very much.
