Guys,

I am re-building an upper (J&T 16" fluted HBAR) that had a picitinny gas block with set screws and replacing it with a front sight base from a Bushmaster comp upper.  I have both uppers completed, except that I can't get the pins to go set the fsb properly.  They are starting, going through the barrel slots, then stopping on the other side.  I have now ruined the pins and before I really mess something up, I wanted to ask for advice.

I really wanted to do this without buying another gas block and front sight.

What am I doing wrong??

You can't just take a used FSB from one barrel, put it on another barrel and expect to drive taper pins.

FSBs are unique to their original barrel because the barrel and virgin FSB are held in a jig and through-drilled together.
Then the holes are taper-reamed and the pins are then driven.

If you want an FSB get the Armalite clamp-on or take it to a qualified gunsmith and have him pin one.
Note I said "qualified" and also he will probably want to use a virgin, undrilled FSB.
