I use the KNS duplex hooded crosshairs (bottom right picture) on my DCM. It gives me a precisely repeatable sight picture for competition, much more than a post (even a DCM post of .052 or .062), especially a standard .072 post. Midway has it for under $30, so it's not a big risk to try one out. |

There is nothing more precisely repeatable about this front sight than any other front sight. It is all "in the eye of the beholder" - literally. This seemingly simple modification takes the service rifle shooter out of "service rifle" category and plants them squarely in the middle of "match rifle" category. That puts them right along side the full-blown adjustable butt stock match sights, accurized, low trigger pull weight rifles. I tried the same type of sight on my M1 Garand. It really doesn't help. |
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, no matter how wrong it is. Here in the People's Republik of Noo Joisey, adjustable stocks are illegal, so no one with ARs use them. And in the TriCounty Rifle League I shoot in, Service Rifles shoot against Space Guns every match. Oh well. And yes, we usually get outclassed. And when your eyes get to the same condition as my 52 year old peepers, let's see how you feel with a 2x4 on the end of your barrel, the same color as the 6" black on 100 yd targets. With the crosshairs, it's much easier to place the front sight precisely and directly on the center of the bullseye, without trying to hold a 6 o'clock (tangent) hold, or a center hold where the top of the post (regardless of whether it's .052, .062, or .072 wide) blends right into the target. Like I said, PRECISELY REPEATABLE. |
You are assuming that the guy is competing in sanctioned matches. If he's just blasting at the range, a KNS front sight certainly makes the sight picture better, ESPECIALLY as you won't have to adjust the sights for lollipop hold. |

Your ability to center a cross hair on a fuzzy bull is no bettter than your ability to center a fuzzy bull in a circular aperture. I suspect your ability to do a six oclock hold is similar to both the above (note that service rifle shooters score approximately the same scores as the match rifle shooters). If you cannot resolve a 0.050" wide post, you will not be able to resolve a finer cross hair reticle. Get your vision corrected. If you or your buddy wants to buy one and try it, be my guest. But don't expect big changes in your scores and beware the placebo effect. P.S. - I apologize for my earlier, raspy comment. |
