I've built a total of one AR so far & I put a free float tube on it, no FSB. So now I'm trying to build a retro XM177 looking AR45 & I wanted carbine length triangular handguards, so I called Model 1 Sales & ordered a pair from them. I received them tonight & they aren't bad looking. They came with heat shields & both end caps. After looking at the end cap a minute I realized I didn't know how the front cap was secured to the FSB. The last time I messed with these things was forty years ago & all I can remember was I had hell with the straight type slip rings. I looked in my USMC M16A2 tech manual & it didn't show anything about the front end caps. Can somebody explain how these things are attached to the FSB? I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn or anything but I know that if one end isn't secured these things are going to rotate. Best I can remember, they didn't rotate on the ones we had

The step on the barrel limits fore & aft movement; the gas tube limits rotation...

Are you telling me that I can call M1S and order a 607 hanguard set? Just like that?

Just like that.  You're supposed to ask for the short triangular handguards.

Yep, worked for me. Just call & ask for it, they aren't advertised. They'll quote $65 but by the time it got to me it was $76, shipping I guess. I picked that little flower out of one of these posts on this forum. It pays to read them all, even if it doesn't pertain to what you're looking for. You just might find a gem hidden in there somewhere. I love those retro carbines!!!! Love those little Commandos, used to see the "Spooks" running around with them all the time. Levis & Hawaiian shirts!!!

Now all we need are some 607 stocks...for under half the price of a new AR.

I saw them on their rack at the SAR show last weekend, looked pretty good.

Excuse me for the on-topic reply...

I just happen to have a 20" HBAR apart for shortening...here's the front cap in position between the barrel step and the FSB, with the gas tube in place...top pic is about 1/2" away from being together; bottom is as it would be pinned in place...

The pencil profile barrel is the same; the step is not as exagerated...

The gas tube keeps it from rotating.  If you are gonna use one on a blowback gun (ar45), you might want to install a cut off end of a gas tube in the FSB to hold it in place.

That makes sense! I was going to send the handguards & caps to the barrel maker so he'd know exactly where to put the FSB anyway. I'll have him profile the barrel for the step to hold the front cap in place. Thank you postino.

I was going to add a gas tube anyway, just so it was visible through the handguards, for looks only. This all makes much more sense now.

I'd take a picture of the handguards but I don't have a camera at this time. The overall length of the handguards with the end caps installed is 6 9/16", if that helps.
