What holds the taper pins that retains the front sight base?

Friction???? I'm not sure what you are asking - they are tapped into place.

so they go in from the right? and have to be tapped?
I haven't done this before so I am wondering.

You put the skinny end of the pin in the larger hole, and use a soft mallet to tap it into place. They stick very well. It's really not a problem; only one end of the pin will go in far enough from the correct side of the sight to even look like it's right.

Unless you have an RRA type barrel with the straight pins, taper pins only fit in one way.

Nope, a good solid whack to seat them is all that is needed.
