I am amassing a large collection of A2 front sight bases. I am looking for one that matches my pin holes close enough to at least open the pin holes and make it work. As you may have guessed, that's not working out too well. Does anyone know who manufactures the A2 that is drilled and tapped for hex heads. They are below where the taper pins would be and compress the base rings as opposed to passing through the base and barrel. I even think it may retain the bayo lug. Anyway, if anybody remembers who makes them, would you mind giving me a heads up. Trying to match used sights to already drilled barrels is getting to be a pain and I'm too old and cranky for the aggravation.

Thanks,
Rick

I think you are referring to a CMP windage-adjustable front sight assembly.  They are drilled and tapped for set screws only actually.  It's not a conversion from taper pins to set screws.

Could very well be, I'll check them out. Thanks for the help.

The term CMP is a reference to the Civilian Marksmanship Program.  Companies like White Oak Precision and Compass Lake perfom set-screw installations on new barrels.

I would start with White Oak Precision first.

for a barrel that is already drilled for taper pins try the Armalite adjustable fsb, it clamps on around the barrel so there is no need for the taper pin holes.

That's probably what he was talking about in the first place.  ETA: where can you find one?

DSG Arms should have them on catalog

Does this Armalite front sight look like a regular front sight assembly?  Or is it one of those gas blocks that has a railed top for a detachable sight?

ETA: We're in search of an A2 front sight assembly that is tapped for hexagonal set screws.

Is this it?

It's made by CMMG.

the FSB made by Armalite is different from the one made by CMMG: it a clamp on FSB

Frens, that's the one I was looking for. Just when I thought my medication was causing me to imagine things.....
Thanks, for helping me out. I was thinking about the set screw idea. In fact that's probably what I'll end up doing with these eventually. I'll mill some flets on another barrel and thread the sight base. I just have one barrel that has the taper pin holes  far enough apart that I can't set screw to solid barrel without grabbing the holes. If that makes any sense.

Awesome, I actually might get one of those myself.
