| Hello Team, first time on this forum. Does anyone have any feedback on whether to place the front sight on the barrel or on the hand guard rail? What differences will it make, and as barrel heats up from shooting will it affect the front sight. I am building an 18" Hbar with a12" continuous no gap top rail. Any thought would be helpful. Thanks |

If you are looking for consistent accuracy from iron sights, a barrel-mounted front sight will probably be more rugged and perform better than a sight mounted on a rail.
Most who are running a free float rail handguard tend to run some kind of optic as a primary sight, and for back up iron sights the rail mount are adequate, all depends on how solid the handguard is. |

This. All rails will have some flex that will affect the point of aim in different position. Not a big deal if they are only for backup but not ideal for precision work. |

Placing it on the barrel will give you a slightly longer sight radius (by around 2 inches). If you plan on shooting irons only, I'd suggest you increase your sight radius as much as possible. The sight might get a little hot when shooting, but it shouldn't be a big deal unless you're going to be touching the front sight (e.g. when you have a flip-up front sight gas block).

I agree with the above. It depends on how tight the rail is and if you have an optic.
If I had a long free floated rail with an optic, I would put a folding front sight on the rail, just because it's easier. because I would only use it if the optic goes tits up. |
