How difficult (for someone who has never done this) is it to remove a front sight post/gas block on an upper and swap it out for a low profile gas block?

I saw an middy upper with a an A2 style FSP for $300
but I ultimately want a low pro gas block

Is it worth the effort to get the upper with the A2 FSP and the swap the gas block out
or is it easier to just start with a complete upper and then assemble a barrel, tube and gas block

I have been trying to figure out the same thing for a while, because I bought a Daniel Defense 16" M4 barrel with the FSB and now I'm thinking I don't like it lol...

A lot of people say that the FSB is the best gas block you can possibly have since it's been pinned to that barrel.  You CAN remove it and replace it but you run the risk of the new gas block not lining up properly or being as reliable.

Your other option, which I'm sure somebody will recommend, is to cut off the FSB above the gas tube port and cover it up with a free float tube and slap on a front flip sight.  That way you'll still have the best possible gas block and you should be able to cover it with a 12 or 13" tube.

Somebody slap me if I'm all wrong!!

Oh also, removing the FSB is not hard - all you need is a hammer and an appropriately sized punch.

Removing the gas block isn't hard, just use a good set of punches, a hammer, and the Brownells Front Sight Bench Block.

If you can get what you need for cheaper with this upper, then go for it.  If not then it might not be worth your time.

There is a tacked thread that describes this process.  " assemble your own..."
(sorry, I can't link from here)

this is what you need.

Hammer
Punch that fits
roll pin punch (not necessarily needed but handy)
support block

Is the muzzle pinned?

build it

Not sure if it's pinned.
Here's the upper I'm thinking of getting, but I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble of removing the FSP and the  replacing it.

I don't want to shave it down either.

easy..

get couple of punches (right size) and a way to hold the rifle down without scratching it.  it won't work well with a vise..  i find it better to lay a tick leather or some clothe on concrete and hammer out the pins. (wood support block works nice)

remember to figure out which way the pin comes out.. they come out only one way.

in most rifles, when you look down the barrel (check action make sure unloaded.. and better to take the upper a part and bolt out) , you must drive the pin out from the right side to the left side..   as far as i know only stag rifles have opposite direction pin.(i could be wrong.. i am wrong all the time).

i find it alot easier to use a lighter hammer with more speed vs heavier hammer with slow speed to drive the pin out.  i use a 8oz hammer i got from sears.

alot of people cowitness front site with option.. but i don't.. i prefer flip up front site.

that being said.. you need to realize that if you remove the front sight and put a lower gas block, it will look strange as you will have exposed gas block on the barrel... unless you are thinking of gas block with rail on top (i don't recommend as this limits your front sight option).

you need to consider if you will get a longer rail to cover up the visible front gas block.

Yeah I want to put a flip up sights as well.
No rails for me. I want to put a Magpul MOE handguard but would how goofy would it look with and low pro gas block. or would and flip up sight/gas block work better with a MOE HG?

If you use a low pro gas block what is going to hold your Moe handguards on?

Can't I just add the little flange piece (i don't know what it's called) just behind the gas block?

yes you can..

but gas block will look goofy.. but  i don't mind goofy.

what you may want to try is YHM gasblock/flip up front site combo.
