I'm looking at ordering a new upper and can't decide on the sight configuration.  This will be an A3 upper and I want to use either an ACOG or low power scope.  However, I also want the option of having open sights.  For the front sight, could I use an A2 front sight post with an ACOG/low power scope or would I need a flip-up front sight?  I plan on using a removable carry handle for the rear open sight.

With a 3X or less scope you ought to look at a flip up front sight. With a greater than 3 power scope the front sight disappears (for me). Right at 3X it is ignorable as a fuzzy greyness in the sight picture, but that can be a little annoying.

What he said.....FWIW if you are going to get one get the fold down.  Once you zero irons and mount optics you will quickly forget that the irons are there and you can also use a lower mount for non magnified optics with a fold down.  If my Colts had not come with sight towers I would have gotten fold downs.
