How deep is the hole in the lower receiever for the front take down spring and detent supposed to be? I have a lower where the hole doesn't seem deep enough to allow me to install the spring and detent and compress it enough to slide in the take down pin. Thanks, |

The hole for the pivot pin detent should be 1-1/8" (1.125") deep. If the hole in your lower isn't this deep you can either drill it out to the proper depth with a 3/32" drill bit or you could just clip a coil or so off the length of the detent pin spring. The vent hole on the side of the detent pin tunnel boss should be a 5/64" hole located exactly 1" back from the front end of the boss. The fact that your receiver is missing this hole simply indicates that somebody wasn't paying attention. HTH . . . . . . Doug |

Actually, the hole in the side was not on the first AR/M16s, and I have an old Ordnance Manual that includes instuctions on how and where to drill the hole. My very early Rock River lower also came w/o the hole, while the more recent one did. I've put the early one on my early M16 Air Force type clone, so it is more "correct" |
Hell, the very first M16's, and even the earliest AR's (the SP-1 Colts), didn't have a hinge pin detent tunnels at all, much less the raised "boss" to house the detent on the side of the lower. They were all perfectly "slab sided" on the right hand side of the lower. It's hard to imagine that your "very early" Rock River lower dates any earlier than about 1994 which, IIRC, was the year that RRA first went into business. All good . . . . . . Doug |
Never meant to imply that the RR lower was preban. I know when they went into business. Just commenting that the first couple of thousand of their lowers didn't have the hole either |
