Got my first AR on Saturday (brand spankin new 16" RRA) - went to a military rifle shoot yesterday. fired 3 sighting rounds with American Eagle 55gr factory loads - Lovein'it Pulled trigger on 4th round - click try immediate action drill - can't get the bolt to retract. Thankfully experienced shooters were there with me and figured out the problem. Problem was one of the gas rings jumped out of it's track and a piece wedged into the bolt carrier. Now for the question - should I just replace the gas rings - or should I send the upper back to RRA to have the bolt checked? |

Chances are these is/was a bur on inner edge of the key threads that caught the ring and tore it off. If the inside of the gas section is free of burs (read the gas ring pulled the bur off), then you should be able to just re-ring the bolt and be down with it. At the least, give RRA a call since they will either send you a new set of gas rings or a whole new carrier for free (read swap the carrier out, so don't get happy thinking that you will have a extra carrier when it's all said and done). |

Met with my dealer today - recommendation is to install new rings and give it a go. If failure occurs again - then send it back to RRA. Apparently this is a rare occurance - they checked and there are no burrs in the BCG - their best guess is that when the gas rings were installed, one was either malformed and not caught , or bent during installation.hinking.gif I'll post an update once I get time to get back to the range. |

Installed the new gas rings and went to the range - got up to 10 rounds this time before experiencing the same problem. Time to send the rifle back to Rock River head.gif |
