I have scoured AR15.com for help with this, but have gotten more confused than anything. I currently have a piston system on my AR, but I want to go to DI so I can use more readily available parts as well as use handguards without having to modify everything. The rifle has a carbine length gas system and I have a 15" NOXs handguard. I was going to get a low profile gas block, but then I started reading about dimpling barrels. My barrel is not dimpled, but has the pins drilled since the current gas block uses pins.
1. Can I just tighten the set screws on the low pro gas blocks down into the pin holes? I also read what essentially amounted to: no two gas blocks are the same; if you wanted to pin a new gas block on, you would need to get the pins redrilled. As I was considering getting an A2 FSB and just cutting it down, this kind of puts a kink into the plans.I like the idea of having two pins holding the gas block on and using the existing pin holes on a low profile system (I was kind of amazed nobody actually manufactured anything like this from what I could find; I would have bought one in a heartbeat if it was $50 or less). The current gas block is an Adams Arms railed gas block. 2. Is it true that you have to get the pins redrilled with a new gas block? I have read so many peoples' responses that say so many different things my head is spinning. I am not knocking Adams' piston system. It has been great for me (2500 rounds mostly trouble-free in the last 8 months). I just don't like how there is almost zero compatibility with anything other than magpul handguards without voiding warranties. Thanks in advance for helping this confused guy out. |

Everybody: Thanks for the input on gas blocks and pointing me towards the clamp on gas blocks. I am will be ordering a Vltor Low Profile Clamp On GB and a Yankee Hill Machine gas tube tomorrow.
Kernal87: Those are some really nice looking gas blocks. If I could, I would buy one of them, but since I am trying to do things as cheaply as possible, it's not in my budget right now. I will definitely look at those for future builds though. Again, thanks for all of the help. I will post up some pictures once I get everything built and ready to go. |

Wow! a 154.99 for a gas block?

| One of the things that the NTI gas blocks seem to do really well as a low profile gas block is to not interfere with the modular mounting systems. I can't speak for keymod, but there is one mlok section on the bottom of the rail that is unusable due to the gas block screws being there. The NTI gas blocks wouldn't have this problem (I think) since the screw is on the upper right side of the gas block. |
