| I'm swapping out a gas block from a clamp on to a set screw type, how do I know when I'm on the gas hole on the top of the barrel? |
|
usually, the hole in the gas block is1 to 2 times larger in diameter than the hole in the barrel. So, you don't have to be 100% exact.
Basically (and I've done a few), get a very fine pencil, ruler etc and draw a line on the barrel. Same thing on the gas block. Line 'em up by eye and you should be fine. If your gas block has a rail, you can use a bubble level on it, and compare it to one on the upper. They should be close. I bet there's a scientific way, and someone will chime in on my neanderthal methods

Gas Block Dimple Jig
That one is designed for vltor and larue spacing but all the blocks I've seen have the hole under the gas port in the same spot. We're also working on one for Stag blocks. And the jig to drill the Vltor block is now available. Here's how it works along with the taper pin drilling jig |

seems like you could use a transfer punch threw the gas block set screw hole, one side at a time once lined up where you want it, the slide the gas block back out of the way dimple it and slide it back. never done one but i did sleep at a holiday inn express. I've done sort of like this but just used the drill. The transfer punch is a good idea. The problem is still getting the alignment where you want it. With the jig it puts the gas ports right in line. |

I've used it on 4 builds so far with 3 different manufacturers gas blocks. |

Shoot me an IM, I can help you out. |
| If the gas block has rails then you can use some sights to line up the gas block, it takes 2 front sights and a rear sight to line it up and that will get you as close as anything else. as far as making sure that the gas block is over the gas port that is easy if you have standard handguards with the end cap then just push the gas block up to it but if not and you have a free float tube the you want to keep a small gap between the gas block and the lip on the barrel where the end cap would be. it is normally 1/16" but no more than 1/8" of a gap. |
