I am installing a Vltor lo-pro gas block to go under a free float handguard.

What, if anything should I do to prep the barrel for installation?

I have the set screw type, should I drill dimples in the barrel, or create a “flat”?
What is the best way to protect the bare areas of the barrel left by the standard FSB (BM doesn’t park. underneath)?
Would a good high temp spray paint work?
Is there an easy way to ensure it is installed straight?
How do you ensure the gas ports are lined up correctly?

I removed the front sight on my RRA to install a larue handguard.  I basically put a nice coating of oil on the barrel forward of the sight and in between the two rings and tapped it forward with a plastic hammer.  I didn't notice any scratches to the barrel.  As far as the set screw, I'm not sure because I reinstalled the sight.  The pins index on cutouts in the barrel so that's how alignment is insured with the standard A2 sight.

I made a jig for drilling the dimples but you can use an eye ball and the gas block to do the dimples.

Pinning is also a good idea.
