I am proceeding carefully with my first build.
I have decided on a Shilen 20" barrel that takes a .750" gas block.
I want a low profile gas block & see that there are two types,
Clamp on and ones held in place with set screws.
Is there an advantage to one over the other?  Is a clamp on
preferable to a set screw type?

TIA  Roger

I like the set screws with dimples in the barrel, I've never had one move on me.  If it's going to be covered with a long hand guard it makes little difference.
Another plus for the set screw type is the set screw pulls the gas block tight at the gas port and you have less gas leakage.

+1 on set screw style.  If the barrel has dimples, aligning the gas block is silly-simple.  If not, it's still not hard.  I typically use the YHM low profile even when it will be exposed.

ETA: When I say set-screw style I mean the solid ones, not the clamp on.

Most of mine are clamp-on.
I like the bigger screws and the ability to tweak the windage.
