I've got a Larue gas block...how do you make sure the gas port is aligned correctly?

The screws go on the bottom.

There's no front sight involved and the hole in the gas block is larger than the port in the barrel so you have a lot of latitude for getting it lined up.  Keep the barrel perfectly level so that it's easier to eyeball it and you'll have no problem.  There should be a shoulder on the barrel jsut behind the gas port that will show you how far to slide the block onto the receiver.  You should probably keep the block about 1/32" off the shoulder to account for the width of the handguard end capthat isn't there but it's not necessary.

Line up the threaded hole for the set screws with the dimple/flat machined on the barrel.  If you don't have a dimple, then you should get one if you want the block to stay on the barrel.

going to sound dumb but this is what i do.

remve FH
remove BCG
insert a FIRED cartridge and push it in slightly to form a seal
get the gas block where you think it goes and tighten the set screws snug but not tight. blow through the muzzle.  You will know right way.  You can put your finger over the gas tube in the upper and feel the air easily if you're hearing is bad.
Tighten the set screws, and then remove the unit/.  You should be able to see the marks from the set screws.  Take a center punch and make a dent then make a pocket with a drill press or very carefully with a hand drill.  make sure your pocket is drilled precisely wher the set screw will be.
reinstall the gas block and red locktight the set screws into place, retest alignment and you're good to go.
