I really hope this isn't a dumb question.......... I've been shooting AR's for quite awhile and have never experienced this.  I have a new rifle that seems to have some type of gas issue.  The rifle fires and cycles flawlessly.  But after each round is fired, a seemingly excessive amount of gas creeps out around the charging handle.  So with a tight cheek weld, I'm getting a huge whiff of lead.  It's so uncomfortable, that I literally have to pull away from the rifle after each round or so.  Any idea what might be causing this?

I should also mention that I'm NOT using a can, and I have a BCM charging handle.

Have you switched ammo types recently?  Some brands of ammo are smellier and smokier than others.

Nope.  I pretty much shoot Federal XM193 exclusively.  And I'm not having this issue with any of my other rifles.

Mybe the upper/lower tolerance where it mates together in that area is wider than your other rifles permitting more gas to escape. YMMV

Different kind of gas system & barrel length configuration on this one vs others you have experience with?

Different configurations IME have different amounts of residual gas that come out of the gas tube and chamber while the action is cycling.

May just be a looser fit between the charging handle and upper receiver allowing more gas to escape.  Something you might try is to put a coat of grease on the sides of the charging handle which will block gas from coming up around the handle.

This.  Different gas system and the system in this rifle is slightly over gassed. Is your BCM CH a current production with the gas diversion feature or did you buy it a year or two ago or used?  If it is over a year old it does not have the gas diversion feature.  You can try the PRI GB CH.  I know it will fix the issue because my son's COLT was the same way.  A really unpleasant rifle to shoot until I put in a GB CH.  Problem solved.  I would think a current production BCM GF would fix it too unless you are dead certain your current BCM was made in the last 6 months or so, not purchased, and especially not purchased off the used EE, but an honest to God new production Gunfighter.

Thanks for the feeback.  Much appreciated.  Just as an FYI, the rifle has a 16" barrel with a mid length gas system.  It is my only rifle with this exact set-up as my other middies are 14.5" and 18".  I was definitely considering trying a new CH (my BCM was probably manufactured 2 years ago), and I think you're feedback has pushed me firmly that way.  Thanks again!

That should have a pretty mild gas system.  I have a 14.5 carbine that pussed a lot of gas out the back so I bought a Gas Buster charging handle, problem fixed.  You could try the Gas buster mod.

I would think that the BCG has something to do with the difference you've noticed.

Not knowing why they're doing it, I've noticed that the holes drilled in the side of the bolt carrier (There are three, two in the depression that trips the ejection port cover, and one farther back in the cuts for the forward assist) to let the gasses out vary in size.  A bolt carrier with smaller holes in teh side would probably vent more gas out to the rear.

Are the holes in the bolt carrier of the new gun larger or smaller than the ones in your other guns?  I'd guess smaller in the new gun.

What do you think about swapping BCGs between your new gun, and one of the others that doesn't seem to blow as much gas out the rear?  Try a side by side comparison, and then swap the BCGs back where they came from and compare again.
