Just received a BCG from someone on the EE, and everything looks great except for the outside of the gas key. It looks like someone had it in a pair of visegrips or pliers... you can see the teethmarks in the photo. My question is twofold... 1- is this normal (supposedly NIB/NIW, and looks brand new save for these marks), and 2- will this have any effect on the operation of the BCG? I dont see how it really would, but I defer to the experts on this board.

If this is not normal, but doesnt hurt anything, should I just leave it be... or should I smooth it down... im a bit of a perfectionist, but I am not looking for a safe queen. How concerned should I be about this? I did ask the seller for a pic of the gas key prior to purchase so I could see the staking of the gas key screws (they look decent... not the best ever, but sufficient), but was assured that this was a brand spanking NIB BCG with the staking done with the fancypants staking jig.

Thanks in advance for your opinions/advise.

I don't think it's normal but I don't think it will hurt anything. I would leave it alone or get some of that gun blueing stuff in a bottle and touch it up. Me personally, I would use it as is.

I'm no pro by any means but I've never seen one look like that.

You paid for a NEW BCG and this is what you got?   This is not acceptable.  While it probably will not effect the BCG performance, this isn't what you paid for.  Try to get it exchanged, but if you end up SOL, you should hopefully be okay (but I would out that seller if that is the case!  don't let others make this same mistake of dealing with the individual!!!)

Could be damage from shipping, maybe rattling around in a box with other parts. Any signs of wear on the bolt face, locking lugs, or cam pin? BSW

With the shortage of parts at the moment, if I couldn’t ask for and receive a replacement, I would just keep the bolt and carrier.

The damage looks minimal and can probably be blended out with some crocus cloth and oil. After blending out the damage, degrease with brake cleaner and touch up the area with cold blue.

this is what I was thinking, but i did pay 'obama' price for a new BCG... I guess I will contact the seller and see what he has to say. It was supposed to be new-in-wrapper, and it came wrapped in Wal-mart bags
.

In my professional opinion, it looks like teeth marks from some type of clamping device, be it a clamp, visegrip, or some other form of pliers. I just am hoping that the gas key is not out of round and has problems coupling with the gas tube. I dont feel like being a ball-buster, but when I buy something new, i want it fucking NEW. This is going to be my SHTF gun... and I dont want to worry about my gas key failing at a critical moment.

Thanks for your input everyone.

I was the seller. WOW, I don't know how I could have missed something like that. Every single one I've sent out has been brand new. Possibly charged with a charge handle and cycled forward with the bolt release in an upper, or factory test fired in a newly built gun, but they have all been brand new. I don't know how I could have missed that, it must have been that way when I got it. I already sent a PM. If you want to, please send it back and I'll refund the full cost of the BCG + an extra $7.50 for your return shipping. I am terribly sorry, I REALLY don't know how I could have missed that.

Oh, and the plastic wal-mart sacks, that's my packing to help recycle them instead of throwing them away. They make good packing, I use them all the time for that.

Very stand up.
This is what people like to see.

Everyone makes mistakes, sh.. happens.  I'm glad it looks like it will all work out.

I just love an EE happy ending.     We don't see many of those.

Glad it worked out.

I am a less experienced  AR owner than most on this site but I can recognize excellent customer service. Not many business owners would openly identify and own up to their mistakes like this. Hat off to you sir.

And I agree as well. The damage was enough to make me go WTF? and ask a question, but not severe enough to warrant a replacement or any such thing. Shawn was very quick to respond to my complaint, and offered to make it right with me... and to echo what was already said, there is not enough of that going around these days... seems integrity and honor are short supply lately, and it is refreshing to see people who will uphold their end of a deal.

I gave Shawn a +1 on the feedback thread, and I would do business again with full confidence.

And an A+ for a class act. I'll remember the name if / when I buy from the EE again.
