What do the gas rings do?

What will the rifle start to do when the gas rings go bad?

The gas rings seal off the front of the gas chamber in the carrier. As the barrel pressure opens the bolt, the rings pass over the carrier ports, and the remaining gas is vented out of the carrier gas chamber. The rings just semi seals off the front of the bolt in the gas chamber.

The fact that the standard gas system leaks from about every opening there is, and the barrel gas port is sized to allow that to happen, the rings dam near have to worn to nothing before you can start blaming them for cycling problem.

As for going bad, it just depends on the rings.  Some have been known to snap in less than 1000 rounds, while others last for 50,000 round or more.

P.S. The first person that tells you to stagger the rings, really doesn't understand that during firing the rifle, the rings are in constant motion, and the will move around on their own free will.  Sometimes during firing, the gaps will be lined up, and a couple of shots later, the will be stagger again.

Just to add, if you think that you have a gas system problem, check the key allen screws to make sure they are tight (35lbs).  Most of the time, it's the carrier key that is loose, and seems to be missed when trouble shooting the rifle.

The rings need to be replaced when they get so thin they break off.

Them breaking would be a good sign but usually before they get that far gone the bolt will drop out of the carrier when the carrier is inverted, Strip the cam pin, firing pin ret pin, and firing pin from the bolt carrier assembly and turn the bolt carrier so the bolt is down. The bolt should not fall out.
