Bearing in mind that I know almost nothing about how an AR-15 functions...

Where is the gas tube?  How hard is it to clean?  How do you remove and replace it?

Best way to clean it is to shoot it. It is under the handguards. There is a small roll pin on your gas block that holds the gas tube in place. The handguards will need to be removed for you to change the gas tube. I suggest not worrying about it.

Yep, the gas tube is above the barrel just under the handguards. It's a thin metal tube that runs from the front of the reciever just under the carry handle to the front sight block. It pretty much takes care of itself, just leave it alone unless you are having problems and think the gas system is the culprit.

When you see those yard-long pipe cleaners at the gun show, just walk right on, unless you have a really  big meerschaum.
