Got a couple of questiona about the part of the gas tube that sticks out about an inch in the upper. I never really knew this had to be cleaned, so I have been neglecting it during my cleaning. I have only put about 300 rounds through, but not until today gave it attention. Here are my questions:

1. Is the black color shown in the picture below never coming off? Is this mean its damaged?

2. How do you clean this part, is their a special tool or technique you all use?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I used to worry about it with pipe cleaners but honestly there is so much pressure in there you probably won't have any issues.

Now i just shoot and clean the barrel and bolt and carrier, I never bother with the gas tube.

Thanks for the help. I was able to find some things on the Internet, most seemed to agree just leave it alone, and replace the entire gas tube every 3-4000 rounds.

If I notice the end of it is worn down like the rest of the tube. Around 15-20k  or so.  A new one has a bulb like end which is larger than the tube itself.

I've always used CLP and a couple of q-tips to clean while cleaning BCG.  I soak down internals with CLP after shooting personally and the residue usually comes right off if and when I actually clean it.  Never replaced one yet but that's no big deal either.  Have pulled them out of FA M-16's that were a little stained and fouled to clean.  I use a little fine steel wool at FSB for the discoloration and CLP seems to get the rest.
