I know that I'm going to find out the answer to this question soon enough, but here goes:

Do you need a roll pin starter punch to get this tiny roll pin started into the FSB? I'll probably be going into my re-barreling project without one, but if I'll wind up needing to order one, I'd like to get my order in sooner rather than later. I've never tried installing this roll-pin before, so if there's any helpful advice from anyone who's done it, I'm all ears.

P.S.- Do you even need a roll pin punch to begin with?

the right tools will make the job easier, with the starter i see where it will help and plan on getting one later on. i have been using a pair of pliers to hold the rollpin and then tap it in but sometimes an extra hand is needed.

I use a standard 1/16 punch to remove them and a magnetic roll pin holder to seat them. The magnetic roll pin holder is available from Brownells.com. Charles the Gunsmith.

To remove them, I use a 1/16" pin punch. To install them, I use a 3/32" roll pin punch.

I made a starter punch from a small section of an aluminum cleaning rod I had laying around ,  made it 2" long , and drilled a hole in the end of it,just slightly larger than the small gas key , about 3/16" deep , it works alot better than using a pair of plier's to start them

Nope, but starter punches (or at least short shank pin punches) are highly recommended for starting roll pins.

You'll save busting 1/16" punches

+1, I used the stub of a busted 1/16" pin punch
