Ok guys I just received a lothar walther barrel that has the standard .750 diameter in the gas block area but has no dimples for set screws for a gas block...My problem is I have a LaRue 13.2 rail that is going on this SPR and I need to know what low profile gas block I should use that will 1. fit under the LaRue 2. attach solidly 3. Not cause me to have to dimple the barrel....Is that possible? I have read that the clamp style vltor gas blocks dont fit under the LaRue rail. Is that correct?
Any advice appreciated gentlemen Big Bets |
| I got the same barrel and the same question but I picked up a set screw gas block. I'm either going to dimple it or just send it off to adco after I get it assembled and get it pinned as well. I'm not sure I want to try to dimple it though as I've never done it. If anyone can post something helpful I'd appreciate it. |
| Putting the dimples in the barrrel is not as difficult as you might think (although I fully appreciate the apprehension). When you get it lined up you can mark the location and then use a punch to create a small dimple in the barrel (a nail might suffice as well). That makes a useful spot for a hand held drill bit to bite into instead of dancing all over the place when you start to drill a small dimple. Rainier Arms also sells a gas block dimple tool but I am not sure if they are in stock again. Unless you catastrophically F' up the dimples (to the point of drilling through the barrel) you could always send it to Adco for pinning later....or start with Adco...your call. |
| Transfer punches are really cheap from grizzley, harbor frieght etc. Just align, super glue in place after degreasing then put pin punch of correct size through lock screw hole and tap with hammer. Do one at a time but instead of super glue for rest of screw holes install first lock screw in first dimple you punched then drilled. after first one just be careful not to move first dimple by hitting transfer puch too hard. dimples are easy and do not mess up barrel unless they put extra gas ports in barrel (BIG MISTAKE). you wouldn't beleave the satisfaction of compleating a job like this correctly and spending money saved on Wifee Yek. BTW if you try to punch rest of holes at same time you (or me) will always get one dimple out of alignment and places a strain on gas block which might cause alignment problems later which is hard to troubleshoot. that reminds me when gas block is in perfect alignment place witness marks on barrel and base so you can tell at a glance if it's moved. |
