When you buy a barrel, do you worry about the gas port diameter? I wanted a 16" Spikes Tactical mid length with the Optimum profile, and the cheapest one I found was here. It comes with a low profile gas block already installed, which seemed a little odd I thought. Should I just not worry about it, or should I take the gas block off and measure the gas port diameter just to be safe? I never really thought about it until I saw some 16" carbine length M4 profile barrels for $69 that I thought was too good to pass up until I noticed there were a few comments in the reviews about them having a .070 gas port diameter which they said would over-gas the rifle considering the carbine/16" barrel length combination. Having to install an adjustable gas block would seem to negate the cheap price, especially since I would prefer mid length (for other rifles, I already ordered the Spikes). What do you think?

Thanks for any advice.

I have no experience with any Spike's barrels but for 2 and a half bills you'd think they'd get it right.
I'd be more worried about a cheap barrel having a burr left in the port (poor QC) like the low priced 16" carbine length gas system barrel I recently bought. The port measured .070" as advertised but when I gently chased the port with a drill bit, a burr fell out. Not huge but still it shouldn't have been there. It has a set screw type low profile gas block I installed. After 300 rounds or so it doesn't seem over gassed. It has an AR15 carrier and standard M4 carbine buffer.
The next low priced barrel I bought for an A2 build is a 16" carbine length Bushmaster chrome lined that came with a pinned FSB gas block installed. We'll see if it works next range trip as I have yet to fire it. I didn't pull the FSB to check the port.

Since the barrel you are considering  has the LPGB pinned, it will be a bit more involved than removing a set screw type. No big deal. just need the right tools.
ETA: If it did seem over gassed, an H2 buffer (4.6 oz.) and /or an M16 carrier could tame it down.

That's a good barrel, buy with confidence.

What about the cheap 16" carbine length barrels with the .070" gas port? Would they require an adjustable gas block?

Not in my opinion. Run a M16 carrier and heavier buffer if you feel it's over-gassed. The only reason I would run an adjustable GB is for a suppressor but that's me.

while the gas block on the rifle has been installed and pinned, the gas block comes loose and you have to install in final assembly.  and that barrel is awesome.  that is one fine deal.  your choice whether or not you buy it, but there is nothing wrong with it or anything to worry about.

and you have no need to for an adjustable gas block with that barrel.

I have never used that barrel. All mine have been Del-Ton. The FSB were already installed. No issues. I would not worry about that barrel. I know people that use them and are very happy. If u have trouble then check it if u must. I would build it with full auto BCG which 99% of people do anyway.

You have really no reason for adjustable GB unless suppressed

I think my original question was a little confusing. I should have used two separate posts to ask two separate questions. I'm going to assume the Spikes Tactical barrel is gtg no problem. But I'm still curious about the $69 dollar 16" carbine length M4 profile barrels with the .070" gas port diameter. Is there a chart somewhere that lists normal gas port diameters for different barrel length / gas system lengths? I would like to know just what is the normal gas port diameter for a 16" carbine length barrel with a .750 diameter at the gas port.
