My rifle has several thousand rounds through it. It still cycles 100% reliably. Other than waiting for short-stroking, when should I change my gas rings ?

Insert assembled bolt in the carrier w/o the cam pin or FP.  Lift up the assembly by the bolt lugs.  The rings should support the weight of the carrier.  If the carrier drops free, replace the rings.

How, exactly, is a ring replacement done?

you use a small screw driver or other small  lervage device and lift the rigs out in a circular fashin. It easy, but not a comon task in ars, On our 3 gun squad we have rifles w/ over 10k and still on the orginal rings.

Not really. The Ar platform is an easy system to care for.  Proper maintance and good ammo helps.

+1

I probably have >10K through my 3-gun rifle, and the bolt failed the above test so I changed the rings, but even with the "bad" old rings the rifle purred like a kitten.
