Hey guys, been away awhile and had to start a new account. Anyhow I could use some opinions on how to setup my AR / AR Variant's gas systems now that I have acquired a AAC SDN6 and have QD mounts for all the uppers it will work for which I will list below. My question is what would be my best and most convenient gas system that will allow me to go between suppressed & unsuppressed with both sonic, and subsonic loads?? I have a LWRC REPR and it's gas piston system has a 4 position allows gas block, which makes the transition very nice, but I've seen online of some people having issues with conversion kits and I haven't seen a DI gas block that has presets like some gas piston systems. I'm hopeful that I can keep everything versatile and not dedicate a rifle to one setup. Let me know your thoughts guys, I've been googling for days now and have stopped myself in the process of pulling the trigger on a purchase several times now because I'm just not sure. Thanks!
Below is the calibers and gas lengths the this project and FYI, all the lowers have carbine buffers & springs at this point: 7.62x39- 16" barrel mid length port 5.56- 14.5" barrel, carbine port 5.56- 16" barrel, carbine port 300AAC- 16" barrel, pistol port 300AAC- 10.5" barrel, pistol port |

If you're looking to regulate gas on direct impingement uppers, you can do it a few different ways. You can run them full gas, without adjustment, just be ready for a lot of gas in the face. You can also regulate the gas via an adjustable gas block or adjustable gas key. I don't really care for adjustable gas keys, but I love adjustable gas blocks. You can also use one of the adjustable bolt carriers like the Gemtech, or I believe Bootleg also offers an adjustable carrier. These are both specifically made for switching between suppressed and unsuppressed. The Gemtech carrier has two settings. Suppressed mode and unsuppressed mode. I believe the Bootleg carrier has four settings to choose from, but you'll have to double check.
I prefer adjustable gas blocks, as they offer the most flexibility as far as adjustments, and can be tuned for suppressed/unsuppressed use, as well as dialed in for use when switching from load to load. |
| I am a self indulgent bumbler and not an an expert by any means . That said in my limited experience , I haven't had very good luck with mid length gas systems in 16 inch barrels. Recently I had an Mid length 16 inch that wouldn't run commercial 223 reliably Consistent short stroking, same for a mid length 7.62x39 barrel I had a few years ago. I have since traded both of them off. Anadjustable gas block or Key seems a better way to , just because you can run what ever ammo and adjust as needed. |

You could give the Govnah a try? It would take some trial and error and possibly doing your own drilling of the sliding plate, but it could give you 3 presets.
I have personally never used one. Since getting a suppressor, the only time I shoot without it is if I'm in a place that doesn't allow them. My adjustable blocks are set to work with the suppressor. |
