Whats up with the different length gas tubes, Rifle length, carbine length etc. Seems like they could make one size fit all, just a matter of where the port in the barrel is. If I want to build an upper with a 16" barrel what length gas tube should I use? It's a bit confusing to me, being new at it.
Thanks for any advice. |

Different set-ups/calibers require different lengths to function properly. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/06/foghorn/ask-foghorn-gas-system-length-ar-15/ |

Already answered but you answered your own question already. There are basically 4 lengths, Rifle, Mid, Carbine and Pistol (there are custom lengths too). These refer to the gas system/port location of the barrel. There is many many reasons for the length of the gas system, I won't go into that because it would be a long read and the info is already out there. If your looking to build with a 16" barrel ( I'm assuming .223/5.56) you generally have two choices, Carbine and Mid. Mid is less harsh (easy and short explanation) on the weapon and if you have a FSB with bayo lug it will fit a standard bayonet. |

whatever you do, DONT use the cheaper than dirt article about gas tube lengths!! ordered wrong one because of it http://articles.cheaperthandirt.com/ar-15-gas-system-identification-guide/ As much as CTD blows I wouldn't blame the article for ordering the wrong tube. Now a days you can get almost any gas system on any barrel. Not knocking you, just make sure you know what you have. |

As I have learned in my 1st build, being aware of what parts come in your order is important. My gas tube did not come with a roll pin. My barrel with FSB did not come with sight post, spring, or detente pin.
As to the OP question. OP, make sure you read through AR Basics thread: http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_3/128_AR_Basics.html and all associated information. There was a very informative article about gas system lengths that seemed to explain it well. Take some time to read and you will likely find all of your questions answered and learn some things you didn't even think to ask. I have been pouring hours of reading in over the last 3 weeks as I began my journey to AR ownership. It has been very informative and this site has consistently been a great source of info. A big thank you to all the veteran ARFCOM members who share their knowledge. |
