| I noticed the other day that I can fit 31 rounds into them, but they will not lock unless the bolt is locked to the rear. My question is, were they designed to hold 31 rounds to give you that 1 extra shot after a reload, since the bolt would've been locked after the last shot? Or is it just an "accidental" feature? |

They are designed to hold 30 rounds I know that, but found they can hold 31 and fully function with 31 as long as your bolt is locked to the rear when inserting the mag. My question was mostly if that was a design flaw/feature or was it something that someone thought up and did. I can see loading 6 mags with 31 rounds in them to put in my pouches and having the 7th mag in the weapon. When that mag is out your bolt locks, you insert a fresh one, and since the bolt is to the rear you could actually lock it in place. I guess I'm just curious if anyone else has ever noticed it, maybe even tested if it damages the mag, etc. Assuming it's safe, 1 extra round could make a difference. |
| The extra space is so that you can easily insert a full ( 30 round ) mag on a closed bolt and have the mag lock in properly. If they were designed to hold 31 they would be marketing them as holding 31. A mag with 31 rounds that can't be inserted with a closed bolt isn't very useful. What if you have a round chambered but want to swap to a full mag. Or maybe your bolt doesn't lock back on last round for whatever reason. You aren't going to take the time to lock the bolt back if you need to reload. |

There are people hell bent that a 30 round mag is only supposed to be loaded to hold 28 rounds so it can be loaded on a closed bolt with ease. Pmags hold 30 rounds just like a USGI aluminum magazine and can be loaded with 30 rounds on a closed bolt with no problems. Some of the guys who download to 28 rounds might not agree with me though ![]() |

So what are you going to do if you want to swap a depleted mag for a full one? |

I would suggest enrolling in some training. they are 30 round magazines, which enable the user to reload on a closed or open bolt, and the magazines will feed reliably. filling with 31 rounds is not safe in a combat situation, nor wise by any account. |
