How important are the rings to overall accuracy and why? My understanding is that as long as the rings hold the scope solidly on the rifle with no play or slop - then does it matter if cheap or expensive rings are used?
I guess my real question is what makes expensive rings better/more accurate? ETA: are one piece scope bases for AR flatops better, worse or neutral compared to traditional seperate weaver-style rings? |
| Higher quality scope rings will have the bore that the scope sits in exactly parallel to the rail that fits the pic rail. They will have more exacting tolerances to ensure a proper grip on the scope body so it is not distorted or slips when fully clamped down. High quality rings won't have a thin flat piece of stock as a clamp, it will use a machined top to the rings. The more screws the better to ensure even clamping force. The cross bolt that clamps on the pic rail will have flats on it that enguage the steps in the rail, so a threaded bolt is not rubbing the pic rail, concentrating stresses and wearing into the finnish. |

Thanks, good explanation. Follow-up..... what are the usual height rings for a flatop? High, XH or does it just depend on the optic? |
different companies measure their rings differently, some measure to the center of the optic over the rail, some measure to the bottom of the optic over the rail. Youll have to make sure of which way they measure, and I believe the center of the optic should be 1.41" above the rail to equal the height of the top of the front sight post. Double check that measurement as I've had a couple margaritas in preperation for new years eve partying.
