I just built first AR. It's just your typical AR with a PSA receiver. While I'm not near the expert on them that many people on here are I've been around them. My dads had one for years and I've had several friends over the years who've had them and were into them so I'm really ignorant to them either.

When I built my new gun I decided to buy one of several different brands or types of magazines to see which I preferred for when I bulk up. I personally have a Lancer L5, Magpul PMAG Gen2, and Gen3 and they all work flawlessly in my gun both in their fit and feeding rounds. I tried fitting an assortment of other peoples mags like aluminum mags, steels mags, Troy mags, ProMags, etc and all of them seem to work fine. They all click right into place and when you push the mag release they kick right out.

The other day I was looking around on AoA and saw that they had a sale on Tapco AR mags for $7 each so I said why not and bought 2. I haven't shot with them, but I can say that their fitment in my gun is terrible. Their tight and you have to slam the magazine in the gun to get it to lock. Then when you push the mag release the magazine does nothing but sit there. You have to push the mag release with one hand and snatch the magazine out of the gun with the other hand. It's a shame because these magazines look like they have the potential to be a pretty decent magazine if they would just fit correctly. If this is how their products generally fit on the guns they're made for then no wonder a lot of people bash them. If I'm not mistaken a PSA receiver is nothing special compared to other brands of lowers that would prevent it from accepting a Tapco magazine? In fact isn't there just a few companies who make receivers for the other brands who sale them under their names?

It's not a big deal or anything as they were only $7 apiece, but is there any way to make these things work properly? Maybe trim some material off the magazines in certain area's or something?

Your quickest and best solution is to not use them. PMAGs are about $10 each so stick with those and keep things simple.

Friends don't let friends buy Tapco.

This

Chock it up to a cheap lesson learned. Tapco,  ati, Blackhawk, ncstar, and utg (with exceptions) should stay away from your rifle.

D&h black Teflon mags are dirt cheap and very reliable
Pmags, proven and cheap

Tapco and ar15 don't belong in the same thought much less the same room

I also prefer the lancers, promags should be on the above list

Okay thanks. Are say saying that ProMags should be on the list of magazines to avoid or are good to buy?

I'm likely going to bulk up with some Gen2 PMAG's as their price is right, and they are proven to be excellent. Plus you can get them in Foliage Green to match my rifle. I like the Lance mag that I bought but it was a little bit more pricey than the PMAG's.

Does anyone on here know if the AK Tapco mags are good or not or should they be avoided as well? I think I've read that they sometimes fit a little tight in some AK's as well. I assume the Magpul AK mags work well, but I more associate Magpul as being stuff for your AR's, and Tapco as stuff for AK's.

Bad.

Get PMAGs.

I have some. They're garbage. Do not buy anything from Tapco unless it's going on a toy gun. I prefer to use surplus metal, bakelite, and steel-reinforced plastic (like Circle 10s) for AKs.

Yes, I meant promag should be on the "no" list

Tapco and ak47 are paired for import reasons "tapco g2 trigger" manufacters like century are trying to go the cheapest legal route hence tapco. There are far better options for ar and ak

I find that Pmags, lancers, and troy mags work well. I've never had issues with usgi aluminum but they are must harder to seat in my rifles than Pmags.

People are telling you PMAGs for a reason.  If you want cheaper options, feel free to get them, but you will posting about problems with most of them as well.

USGI mags tend to feed 300BLK well, the thinner walls help out in that regard.

This is completely incorrect. The ribbed Tapco AK mags are solid.

Not only that there are plenty of videos showing the Tapco mag kick the shit out of the AK Magpul mag. Obviously this is not the case with AR's.  The Magpul AR mags are superior.

Lancers don't break.  Google "broken Lancer M16 magazine " and see what comes up.

Tapco mags can be filed down by hand and be made to work.  I have no idea what  Lower they used for their specs but with about 5 minutes of filing they will fit just fine.

Once they go in and drop fine they will work pretty well.

That being said, you should never need to do any of this on a mag in this day and age and they should be ashamed of producing what they make.

(had to do the same with the couple AK mags I got from them as well.  Once you take a file to them they are flawless in function)

Will never buy them again because good mags can be had for the same price or less with no "make it fit yourself' required.

I have a Tapco poser (5/30) mag so that I can feel free (plus it looks cooler than a steel 5-round mag in pics.)*  Haven't tried shooting with it yet, though.  Surprisingly, they move pretty well in the magwell.  I've read that the Gen 2 version (what I have) is much better and more reliable than the Gen 1.

Note: I live in Rochester, so I don't even get 10-rounds mags like the rest of NY.

There's a reason that Tapco and Pro Mags never move well. The reason is they suck.
