I need a longer rail for my rifle.  Right now I have a 16" BCM carbine with a 7" DD Omega.  How long do you guys think I should go?  I know I want it somewhere between 10" - 12", but I'm not sure.  I've been looking through pictures people have posted to get a feel for the different lengths.  Anyone with longer rails on their carbines care to share their experience?

Are you running out of room for add-ons, you like the look, or are you looking to mount a Bi Pod  or Vertical grip further forward? Lots of things to consider like Balance of the BR and extra weight! Its all up to what you want! M4quadrail

Well, I took Dynamic Carbine 1 with Magpul over the summer and I'd like a longer rail so I can mount my light further up and get a more dominant grip on the gun.  7" rail doesn't give me enough space to do that.  I won't lie, aesthetics are a little important to me since I'm just a boring civ, but function is still number one.

i run DD lite rails of the 10" variety. well, the MK18 RIS II is 9.55" but close enough

the 10" gives me plenty of real estate to mount the things i need/want and isn't so long as to be cumbersome.

Thanks for the pics and info.

Anyone else care to share?

You should probably send me that "defective" 7" DD Omega so I can properly dispose of it for you. They're hazardous and illegal to put in the dumpster. True story.

I went with the 10in Larue rail.  It has plenty of room and isn't too long IMO. Pictured is a 6920

I have a Larue 12" on my 16" carbine.  I love the look, but I am at work for the next couple hours.  Maybe I will try and post a pic later.

I would put a larue 13.2 on it so I could get more site radius from my irons.

I am happy with my DD Lite 12.0.  Gets my hand out where I like it.

I bought a 13.2 for my 16 incher. Remember that the further out you can reach, you more control you have. Also, though, remember that having a light at the end of a long rail will make it feel way heavier.

Have you thought about modular handguards such as JP, V-tac, Troy, YHM?  Put rails only where you need them, narrower profile, less weight, and you don't need a bunch of rail covers.  What's the point of having miles of unused rail that you have to tote around, and cover up to make em comfortable?

There's a couple threads running around here somewhere with long handguards on 16" barrels, I'll see if I can find it for ya.

edit:  Found it, mine are in there, new setup has the Troy TRX-E floater tube.  13" tube on a 16" barrel.

Interesting, but I'm pretty set on a full rail.  I just don't want to buy one too short and want more space, or buy one too long and not need all the space.  Decisions...

If you wanted to keep your front sight base in tact, try the DD 9.5 FSB Lite. You don't see many of them, but they are a nice rail. The FSB remains and the bottom and two side rails extend past the FSB. It gives you more rail space where you want it. And it shields your hands from a hot FSB.

If you're handy with a dremel, you can buy an OMEGA 12 and cut out the top for the FSB to fit through it. That will save you from having to cut the FSB or remove the barrel. A MIL guy on TOS did that and has had excellent results so far.

I'm not really that worried about swapping out my FSB with a low profile gas block.  I should be able to manage it if I read up about it here and with the help of my friend.  I think the DD 12" is what I want.

Running the "magpul" grip, I need atleast 11" to use the grip I prefer and put a light out front.  I run an offset Larue/G2 at the 11 o clock position, or a TLR1 directly on the 9 o clock rail.  A 10 is too short for this...for me.

A 10 is just a tad too short.  If I were getting a Larue rail, I'd probably get an 11, DD lite, I'd get a 12 since they don't make an 11.

Yep, that's just how I wanted to run my gun.  "Magpul" grip with my light at the 9 o'clock.  I'm thinking DD 12" is a winner.
