I've tried everything trying to pop out the FSB pins and no luck so far. Any suggestions or remedies?

I dropped my upper off at a local gunsmith yesterday for the same reason.  After banging on the pins for at least an hour (no visible welds, Bushmaster V-Match circa y2k) I decided I'd better let someone who know what they're doing mess with it.

Funny, mines a Bushmaster.

Just in case you don't know, those pins are tapered. They go in one way only. The come out the opposite way that they go in.

and which way is the way to hit them out?

If it's tapered then knock it out from the side with the smaller hole....

If I were in your situation, I would try striking them on the opposite side from where I was striking them before.

Tried both sides and no luck. hinking.gif All I wanted to do was remove the bayo lug and sling loop. Guess I can just cut them off with a dremel without removing the FSB.

Oh and FSB = Front Sight Base not a flash suppressor

Found this in another thread:

"If you're ready for a front sight removal, remeber front sight base pins are to be taken out of their holes to the same side brass is ejected (if your upper has the ejection port on the right like most do).
If they don't come out at first punch, try heating up the FSB. Dont worry, you wont damage anything"

Make sure you're using a punch with a tip smaller than the pin. The problem I had at first was that I was using a large punch and the pin was mushrooming larger than the hole and not allowing it to move out. I used a smaller punch and it sheared the mushroomed metal off and pushed the pin right out. Just support it on both sides of the fsb and don't be afraid to give it a good whack.

I have had similar difficulty with my Bushy's.  Make sure you are on a solid surface, driving the pins out in the correct direction.  A heavy hammer helps.

We could use a tacked tutorial on this. It comes up almost daily.

I don't know why this is such a big deal.

All you need is one of these:

The smith is telling me that even though it's a 18" barrel with a full-sized Y-Comp, that Bushmaster most likely welded the pins in and then cleaned up the area and parkerized over it.  I was under the impression that they only welded them for SBRs where the compensator was necessary to make it 18" overall.

Bushmaster never welded taper FSB pins in place.  They just often pounded them in so tight, then parked over the assembly, that they are very difficult to remove.

I recently worked on a Colt I personally have had apart in my garage twice before.... (years earlier) but this time the pins were a nightmare.  Never had that happen before..... it was weird.

I've got a Bushmaster also...have a permanently attached muzzle brake to bring it to 16 inches.

I got the pins out without too much trouble.  I still couldn't get the FSB off.

should punch out same direction you push out take down pins.

Try some industrial penetrating oil, figure out which side to hit them on and make sure you have the fsb firmly supported. THe hit them with a good pin and a hammer. If that does no good, give Randall a call he has a neat fixture set up for getting the most evil pins out.

A good steel punch and a few solid hits with a hammer should do it.

How can you use a Dremel to remove the pins? Of course, without ruining the FSB or pins.

+1 on the BFH. More power and easier to control than a hard lick with a smaller hammer. Yes, drive them out left to right, and yes, be damn sure to support the FSB on the other side. Get a buddy to help, another pair of hands to help steady eveything.
ETA: AR15Barrels, how much will that groovy setup set me back?

About $50 for the jaws and pusher parts, but the vise they mount inside is going to be several hundred and weigh 70lbs+
