Howdy folks, my first post on AR15.com -glad to be here.
My pal bought a Ruger SR-556.
I would like to buy him an accessory to go with it as a gift.
I was thinking optical sight, (or maybe laser?).
Throw out any ideas, much appreciated.

there are a lot of light out there for the AR. They range in price from 600 all the way down to 20. For around $100 you can get an Inforce WML. unless your buying used, it doesn't get a whole lot cheaper unless you want to sacrifice quality. You could buy a mount and a sure fire G2, but that is still going to run you 70-80. Sure Fire Mini Scout m300 if you want to spend a little more, around 250.

Thanks.  People are telling me 200$ is not reasonable for an optical sight, but maybe we could do the laser.

Theres quite a few decent sights for under 200. Will it be an Aimpoint or Eotech? No, but they are reliable and have good reputations.
Heres a few good options..all under to well under $200;
Bushnell TRS-25, Vortex Sparc, Vortex Strikefire, Primary Arms micro dot, Lucid HD7, Lucid M7, Primary Arms has another one I forget its name.

You can never go wrong with ammo and mags! You might want to see if you can find a good deal on a lasermax green laser rifle pack if you want to stick with a laser, or a Viridian laser/light combo. Optics are always fun to have on an AR, but unless you know what your buddy plans to primarily do with the rifle you might end up buying something that is not practical for his use.
