I was putting some new furniture on a lower last night instead of going to bed at a decent hour.
Anyway, I notice the new grip has a gap on top of it. I can see the spring.
Should I just ignore it or try to fit it to the lower?

I've seen this before. Sometimes there's always a little gap, sometimes not.
I would check your screw length, try a shorter screw. Also run your screw in and out a few times to make sure it's seating all the way.

Pull the grip and check in the well that goes around the lower and see if there's any debris in it.

Just had that happen on a new build. I took a rubber mallet and gently tapped until it mated up tight. I think in my case, it was just tolerance limits..

It happened to me once - had the wrong spring for the selector in it.
