I've got 3 full cases of Guat 223. Is it still the general oponion to dump it out of the boxes into ammo cans for storage? I hear alot about corrosion from the cardboard boxes and don't want to ruin my ammo. I may use this in the next 2 or 3 years for practice and may not. What should I do?

Send it to me for proper storage.

(Oh... c'mon!  Someone was going to say it!  I just got it in first!)

I've stored about half my Guat stash on strippers in bandos.... the other half I have still in the boxes in ammo cans.

I've noticed some on here saying the cardboard or glue causes some corrosion, but I haven't noticed any on mine yet.

I have 5 ammo cans left with the ammo dumped in loose.  Shot a lot and I wish I had a bunch more.

Why take the chance?  It's known that SOMETHING in the packaging causes corrosion.

So, what kind of MOA do you get with the setup in your profile, Black?

As someone else said, "can sniff butts within 1 moa accuracy".

Lol.

As far as staying on topic, all of my Guat is on stripper clips, in ammo cans.  Except for the grade 2 Guat, which is on stripper clips in my "range ammo" box.

i opened one battlepack in each crate and it looked brand new so i left the rest of them.  I figured if it hadn't corrodedd by then it would be good for while yet.  i would go look up the year but there is too much crap on top of them.

Same here, all of mine is in the original boxes and cases still (most of which is the grade 1 stuff that isn't in battle packs) and I haven't had a problem and don't think I will unless the boxes get wet and stay that way.  I have to believe that's where the corrosion has come from is being damp.

Fixed it for ya.

At todays prices, oh wait, you can't get some of this surplus anymore so it's more of a collectors item than anything.

Have a lot stacked back, some still boxed and some bagged in 250 round count bags, then placed in ammo cans. Any that looked bleh got sorted out and shot first, the rest is in nice shape.

I hope it becomes a collectors item........I bought $8500 worth @ .17 a round. You can do the math.
There was so much speculation going on about the Guat corrosion, it was caused by high humidity or termites or the glue used in the indvidual 30rd cartons....whatever it was, caused me to put all of it into SAW cans, about half loose and the the other half still in the 30rd cartons. Every BP was opened. AIM came thru (THANKS BRYAN!) I was very lucky. The only evidence I had of any of it having the slightest bit of corrosion was probably about 5% of the rounds I saw were just barely milky. The remaining 95% was bright and shiney new looking ammo . I remember commenting on what I bought being so much nicer looking and cleaner than Fed XM193. The thought of all that ammo corroding on me prompted all of it to go into SAW cans. They are VERY heavy as I was able to get 1440rds, or 48 30rd boxes or 1650 loose (55 boxes worth) in a SAW can. That includes a minimum of 40 grams of silica gel. If your wondering how many SAW cans that comes out to..it's between 35 and 40. Pics might come once all of it is brought back under one roof, currently it's dispersed in two locations 650 miles apart.
If you've got more than a years worth of ammo to stash, why take a chance? Ammo cans were made to store ammo. If you're storing ammo, use the cans IMHO

I had several FTF with my Guat surplus.  This was actually good because it forced me to remember my clearing drills.  I would not use this as SHTF ammo but instead use it for general range work.

Just one man's opinion.

I have several still in battlepacks. The BP's I opened up to take a look at were put into ammo cans, still in cardboard boxes. Even the grade 2 I got looked new and most is still sealed. Looking at these pics brings back memories of cheap ammo

Man I can take care of a case for ya if you want, I wished I had packed that stuff deep. I really like to shoot guat.... god i only have a 1100 rounds of it left and I don't ever even think about taking any to the range, that stuff if like fine a finley sculpted gold M-4...I may have to go and take a gleamer at it tonight before I go to bed....those are nice pics.
