I am building my own "discreet"rifle case and was wondering (1)what type of foam to buy,I plan on cutting it to hold the rifles(2)where do you buy it?I have checked with a furniture rebuilder near me but all he has is white and green,I would prefere black.
Thanks for any help.

I could'nt find any myself...after getting tired of searching, I bought an inexpensive carry case, used the foam from it, then gave the box to my kids for their toy guns.

I think you can get the foam you need from Starlight Cases.

www.starlightcases.com

Great folks to deal with - I have one of their double rifle cases and it is absolutely bombproof.

We use a lot of Pelican cases at work, and I've bought extra foam from the same dealer as the cases.  It's CPD Industries.  They have several websites, including www.casesbypelican.com
I'd suggest finding the ph # on the web, and then calling and talking to one of their sales reps.   They have may types of foam and can cut it in varying thicknesses.   You'll probably want to go with an open cell foam if the case will see any type of abuse or hard use.

Good luck, and please post some pics when you're done.

Yeah any pelican or underwater kinetics dealer has the foam in stock!!!

Seach the web for pelican and you will get 1000s of dealers that pop up.  Just go with the big dealers so you can buy "more" direct.

Use closed cell foam!
1. It doesn't attract and hold moisture.
2. It provides better protection for a given thickness.
3. It is buoyant, so if you drop your case in the water, it will float.

Only cheap cases use open cell foam.  That's why Pelican and Starlight sell closed cell foam as an upgrade to their hard cases.

Having cut a lot of foam for cases, use an electric carving knife.  Nothing better.

A while back my wife found some foam for me at a sewing and craft store called JoAnne's Fabrics. The stuff she brought home was absolutely identical to the foam in my Starlight cases-I just had to trim it to fit.

It was the same texture, same density, same weight, even the same color. The price was less than $10.00 to redo an entire 52x13 case. That's $28.00 less than what I was quoted direct from Starlight.

Yeah, I was shocked when she brought it home. Every once in a while I change the configuration of a case, so it's nice to have that ability without paying a lot of money for new foam

Does Joanne's foam come in any other colors than "tactical seafoam green"?

Hehe.....from what I can see, no.

But its lint free, and designed for photographic foam protection.
