My friend just had a battlecomp permanently attached to her 14.5 inch bbl.  This is what the finished product looks like.  Is this the industry standard?  I was thinking about having this guy do mine, but now I'm not so sure.

It is, for a reason.  It should be obvious that it was welded so there are no questions by inquiring police minds.

Looks like that weld didn't cover the entire pin location. I've done that where folks might want to have the FH removed downrange, makes saving it easier when I go to drill the pin out. Most folks leave the weld and don't file it down as that smith did. But I agree with the last poster, you want it to look like it's welded.

Looks about right, you could clean it up with a file and touch-up the blue....but it looks about on par with the ones I've had pinned.

I'll  pass the good advice on.  I've never done blueing.  Can someone reccomend a small bottle that will do her weld and mine?

I bought a 14.5 upper directly from LMT with a regular A2 FH spun on to the front and it was not pinned. They didn't seem concerned. Though I am going to put a bit longer Phantom 2 on it for looks and function. Is the A2 hider adequate on a 14.5?

Guess I'm just lucky I'm in Louisiana when it comes to firearms. Heck, the wildlife people down here ask me let them know when I come to their range with tannerite and other explosive targets ... just so they can watch the fun.

Ummmm, LMT wouldnt be concerned to sell you that b/c it is not their responsibility to make sure you have the SBR stamped lower....  If you don't have the sbr stamp I'd get a FH long enough to get it to over 16.1" and pin it asap... If not, I wouldnt be advertising that I am in possession of an unregistered SBR.  It seems like you're just inviting Federal interest. But what the hell do I know

Have to totally agree with the last two posts..Were you even aware of this before you purchased the upper? You can buy any length upper online or at most shops..

Oh, well, OK, guess I'll get my gunsmith to take care of this chore as soon as possible. I have no intentions of breaking any rules, after all the full auto I used in the Nam to shoot gooks for this government was legal. Lord help me if my legally-long FH was not properly pinned. But, if I told them I forgot because it was just the drugs I was on to help my PTSD, or the pain medicine I was on because I ruined my knee during my honorable service to this country ... well, I guess that wouldn't help my case either.

Unfortunately, they don't care about any of that...

But make sure you get a BCM A2X FH or something else with the proper length b/c the standard A2 FH is not long enough to bring that barrel to the legal length, even pinned.

All joking and cynicism aside, and full well knowing that ignorance is not an excuse ... but, no, I did not know in advance that dealers could sell uppers of any length without worrying about pinning the FHs ahead of time. The 14.5s I have bought in the past were always fixed.

But I did plan to extend it at the time I bought it, and have now installed the longer Phantom 2 on my upper and it is legal as far as overall length goes.

So I'll have to get it pinned now. Any suggestion on a "type" of pinning ... just in case I'm not in the know on this aspect as well.

Thanks.

I'd go with the standard pin weld

First off, thanks for your service and some of us genuinely want to educate those who may not know all the laws pertaining to NFA items and ownership. I find it funny when I have my SBR's and suppressors and the Fudd types all think it's illegal to own. It gives me an opportunity to expand their knowledge of lawful gun ownership.

For the pin and weld job, I would highly recommend ADCO if you cannot find anyone locally. I think they charge $30-40 and have a quick turn-around..

in case you do like the a2 look, BCM makes an extended a2 that when pinned does make it over the 16.1

I just screwed on a Yankee Hill Phantom 5C and it measures about 16.2 in. –– once it is torqued down some more to time it, I should have it right at 16.1 for pinning.

I measured from the back edge of the handguard Delta ring ... is that about the right place to measure from?

With the bolt in place, drop a dowel down the barrel so that it hits the bolt face.  Mark and measure the dowel.  That's your barrel length.

You measure from the face of the bolt to the end of the muzzle.  Minimum length is 16.0 not 16.1 or 16.2.  Adding an extra .100 is a good idea, gives you wiggle room.

Isn't there supposed to be spot or fillet welds on the barrel also?

Today I ordered the BCM A2X FH from BCM because it has already been drilled and comes with the required pin. Will save time and effort for my gunsmith.
