| I recently got ahold of the Midwest Industries SSM free float handguard so I installed it (myself) as well as the Midwest Industries Micro Gas Block. I reused my stock 16" barrel that came on the gun when I bought it as well as reused the gas tube but I changed my stock M&P 15 (.223/5.56) upper to the Vltor MUR upper. Since it's the stock barrel, should I have to check the headspace to make sure it's safe to fire or is checking the headspace only required if you install a completely new barrel?? This is my first ar-15 upgrade process so I'm still a noob at these things... thanks in advance. |

The headspace is a measurement relating to the interface between the bolt and chamber of the rifle. If those 2 items have not changed, then your previous check is valid.
To many, even a new bolt in a fairly new barrel is a safe bet. As long as both parts are machined to the proper dimensions. |

I didn't change the barrel or any of the carrier group items, so it should be good? I just don't want to drop $60-$70 on gauges and not need them. The bolt interacts with the barrel extension, locking in place when you are ready to fire. The upper receiver or bolt carrier does not effect things for you. Since you have not changed your bolt or barrel, they are still "matched" together and nothing else needs to be checked. This assumes that things were ok prior to everything else. |
