Why or why wouldn't you want an HID lamp on your AR?

1000+ lumens and 1-5 hours of run time (depending on the configuration).

How would you want it configured?

A 1,000 lume light would blind you when you flash it on a light colored surface, from all of the light bouncing back at you. I think USMCO3 has a good write up on what kind of lights to use. I think in it he said not to go over 200 lumes for indoor use, could be mistaken tho.

eta: ok, scratch that, didn't understand HID.

HIDs dont hit full power or color temp when first activated.  They are not as robust as an LED.  If you dont NEED the range and power they offer its really too much for most rifles.

Its not all about lumens... its about the brightness of the hotspot.  A much wider beam thats twice as powerful will not seem blinding.

HIDs also don't like being turned on and off in rapid succession.
